The following examples demonstrate how to create searches within Genie across related tables.
Example 1: Find all males who have diabetes.
2. | Click OK to get rid of the Search window if it appears. |
4. | Click on the Sex field in the field list on the left. |
5. | Click on "is equal to" in the comparisons list on the right |
6. | Type "m" in the Value field. |
7. | Click on the Add Line button. |
8. | Select All Tables from the popup menu above the list of Fields. |
9. | Click on the triangle or plus (+) to the left of the [Current Problems] table to expand it to show the fields in the Current Problems table. |
10. | Click on the Problem field. |
11. | Click on "contains" in the comparisons list on the right |
12. | Type "diabetes" in the Value field. |
13. | Click the Query button. |

Note: This assumes that you have actually entered the diagnosis using the term "diabetes" in the patients records. You may also wish to search on "IDDM".
Using disease coding such as ICPC or ICD10 can get around this problem. For more information, read the chapter on Disease Coding.
